Matt's full name is Matthew Smith Bernier. Interesting historical note: The Smith family (Matt's Mother's side- that line is now ended, as the last living person to bear that name, his grandmother, died last winter.) traces its roots to The Tilley Family on the Mayflower. He has a family tree in his room tracing the family all the way back. It doesn't go back past the Mayflower, however. Presumably, whoever drew up the family tree felt that If the mayflower voyage was good enough for the beginning of America, it was good enough for the beginning of their family, too. The Bernier comes from French Canadians. Matt's great-grandmother on his Father's side was full blooded Cherokee. Matt has heard that there are clubs for Berniers in Canada, whose members are all people named Bernier, and whose membership requirements are that you a person named Bernier. Matt is not a member of any of these clubs. Matt went to Hebron Academy for high school, where he graduated with honors as a member of the National Cum Laude Society, and with the Outdoor Leadership Prize from his time in the school's famous Outdoor Education program. He attended college at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where he graduated with honors. Matt's known medical ailments are: >Reactive hypoglycemia- Matt usually cannot go more than 4-5 hours without eating. If he does, he becomes irritable, confused, experiences throbbing, sharp stomach pains, headaches, and has trouble forming and understanding speech. >Various food allergies; juicy, non-starchy fruits and vegetables, fish, and meats are the exceptions to what otherwise amounts to Matt being mildly allergic to whatever he eats. During and after nearly every meal, Matt will become phlegmy, and will cough and snort for ten to fifteen minutes afterwards. Matt has learned to control what he eats, and how he eats it, to manage the symptoms. However, when he either neglects to do so, or is unable to, the coughing can become so powerful Matt vomits, which loses him a valuable meal, which sucks, because he is hypoglycemic. (see above.) >Asperger's Syndrome- This Wikipedia entry is not only very accurate, but also reads like a biography of Matthew's entire childhood. Matt only recently became aware that he had this type of high-functioning autism, but he has been aware of it's effects for some time. He has felt it's negative effects, as aspergers has and still does impair his social function, but he has come to peace with these problems recently, now that he knows that the same condition which has caused so much of the pain in his life is probably also responsible for some of his more remarkable and unique abilities, and in many ways even his abilities as a cartoonist. Matt now knows that what he once saw as a nameless burden is in fact a mixed blessing.
